The underground Swargate–Katraj metro extension is moving towards its main construction phase, with four tunnel boring machines (TBMs) expected to reach Pune in November. The 5.46-km corridor will run entirely underground through south Pune, making the next few months critical for one of the city’s most consequential public transport projects and its effort to reduce dependence on congested roads.
Preparatory activity is already underway, including excavation of shafts needed to construct stations and provide access for underground works. The project includes three stations at Market Yard, Padmavati and Katraj. The Union Cabinet approved the corridor in August 2024 at an estimated completion cost of ₹2,954.53 crore, with commissioning originally targeted for February 2029. The arrival of the TBMs will mark a significant shift from preparatory construction to large-scale underground excavation. The machines are designed to cut through soil and rock while supporting the tunnel as it advances. With the corridor passing beneath established neighbourhoods, controlling settlement, vibration, groundwater and surface disruption will be important for protecting buildings, roads and everyday activity. The tunnelling strategy is expected to use four machines, with excavation progressing from both ends of the corridor. The alignment will reach depths of roughly 28 metres in sections, making construction logistics and emergency access important considerations. The project authorities have indicated that the local geology, including rocky strata, will influence excavation rates.
For residents, the immediate benefit is unlikely to be visible for several years. The larger urban payoff lies in creating a reliable north-south public transport connection between Swargate and Katraj while linking densely populated neighbourhoods with employment, education and commercial destinations. Swargate is particularly important because the metro station forms part of a wider multimodal hub incorporating MSRTC and PMPML bus services. A well-integrated interchange can reduce the need for passengers to rely on private vehicles for the first or last part of their journey. The corridor is also expected to influence development patterns along south Pune. Better rapid-transit access can support higher-density, mixed-use development around stations, but this depends on planning controls, pedestrian infrastructure and affordable connectivity keeping pace with construction. Without those safeguards, new investment can increase land pressure without delivering equal benefits to existing communities.
The project’s approved ridership projections point to substantial long-term demand, rising from about 95,000 daily passengers in 2027 to 1.97 lakh by 2057. The next test is therefore execution. Swargate Katraj Metro must progress without compromising neighbourhood safety, surface mobility or construction quality. If delivered with strong last-mile links and climate-conscious infrastructure, the Swargate Katraj Metro corridor could become more than an underground rail link: it could reshape how south Pune grows and moves.
