Urban mobility planners in Pune are preparing a significant upgrade to the city’s metro system as the upcoming Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar corridor is expected to sharply increase commuter volumes across the network. The proposed shift to longer trains on existing routes reflects a wider effort to ensure that rapid transit infrastructure keeps pace with the city’s expanding employment zones, residential growth, and interlinked daily travel patterns.
The operational network run by Pune Metro, under the supervision of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited, currently relies on three-coach trainsets across its two active corridors connecting PCMC–Swargate and Vanaz–Ramwadi. However, planning teams are now evaluating a transition to six-coach formations as part of the broader Pune Metro expansion strategy, aimed at strengthening system-wide carrying capacity. Ridership indicators suggest a rapidly tightening system. Daily passenger volumes currently average around 1.87 lakh, but projections indicate a potential rise to nearly 2.75–3 lakh commuters once Line 3 becomes operational. Officials estimate that overall demand could climb by nearly 50 per cent after the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar link integrates major IT and commercial districts with the city’s core metro spine.
This anticipated surge has placed renewed focus on operational resilience and infrastructure readiness. Transport planners are assessing depot augmentation at key maintenance hubs, alongside additional rolling stock procurement, to ensure service frequency does not deteriorate during peak travel hours. Without proportional expansion, experts warn that overcrowding risks may simply shift from road corridors to rail systems, undermining the efficiency gains typically associated with metro adoption. The Pune Metro expansion is also influencing long-term network design, with multiple extensions already in various stages of planning and execution. Proposed corridors toward Nigdi, Katraj, Chandni Chowk, Wagholi, and Kharadi are expected to widen the metro’s reach into fast-growing suburban and peri-urban zones.
These additions are likely to reshape commuting flows by improving last-mile connectivity and reducing dependence on private vehicles. Urban analysts suggest that the shift toward higher-capacity metro operations reflects a broader transition in Indian cities, where transport planning is increasingly being aligned with climate-conscious mobility goals. Expanding rail-based systems is seen as critical to reducing congestion, lowering emissions, and supporting more equitable access to employment hubs across metropolitan regions. As Pune’s metro network evolves, the effectiveness of these upgrades will ultimately depend on how well capacity planning aligns with real-world travel demand. The next phase of expansion will test whether infrastructure growth can remain both scalable and sustainable in one of India’s fastest-urbanising cities.
