Pune Garbage Dispute Turns Violent Outside Shirur Temple

A 68-year-old man was allegedly assaulted and threatened after objecting to garbage being dumped outside a temple in Shirur’s Sardar Peth on October 13, with police registering a case against two brothers in connection with the incident.

According to the complaint filed by Deepak Verma, the incident took place around 12.45pm outside the Chamunda Mata temple while the Navratri festival was underway. Verma told police that he asked Rupesh Rakhecha and his brother Rahul Rakhecha not to dump garbage in front of the temple.

The complaint alleges that the two men assaulted Verma with a broomstick and injured his hand with a brick. They allegedly pushed him onto a pile of bricks, abused him and threatened to kill him after he objected to the dumping.

Police have registered a case against the brothers based on the complaint. The allegations have not been established in court, and further investigation is under way.

The incident highlights how the absence of properly managed waste-disposal spaces can bring residents into direct conflict over the use of open areas, particularly around places of worship and during public festivals. The report does not specify whether municipal officials had previously received complaints about garbage dumping at the location.

Police constable Gawali is conducting the further investigation, according to the report.
