Pune Electric Buses Strengthen Public Transport Network

Pune: Public transport in Pune is set for a major expansion in electric mobility after a fresh allocation of electric buses under the Government of India’s PM E-Drive Phase II programme. The move, which also covers Mumbai, is expected to strengthen low-emission public transport, improve fleet modernisation and support Maharashtra’s transition towards cleaner urban mobility.

The latest procurement involves 650 nine-metre electric buses that will be deployed across the two metropolitan regions through a government-backed tender process. The vehicles will operate under Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) in Pune and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) in Mumbai, with both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned variants included to serve diverse passenger needs. The initiative forms part of the Centre’s broader strategy to accelerate electric public transport adoption in Indian cities while reducing dependence on fossil fuel-powered fleets. Urban transport experts believe replacing conventional diesel buses with electric buses can significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions, improve roadside air quality and reduce operational noise in densely populated corridors.

Pune has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing urban centres, with increasing travel demand placing pressure on existing transport infrastructure. Mobility planners note that expanding zero-emission bus fleets can strengthen public transport reliability while encouraging greater use of shared mobility instead of private vehicles. Such investments are also expected to contribute to lower carbon emissions and support long-term climate resilience goals for the city. The procurement has been undertaken through Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) under the PM E-Drive Phase II framework, which seeks to aggregate demand for electric mobility solutions and improve procurement efficiency across states. Industry analysts suggest that centralised procurement models help reduce acquisition costs while accelerating the deployment of cleaner technologies across municipal transport systems. Experts emphasise that the success of large-scale electric bus programmes depends not only on vehicle procurement but also on supporting infrastructure. Charging stations, grid upgrades, depot electrification, predictive maintenance systems and driver training will be essential to ensure reliable operations and maximise fleet utilisation. Cities investing simultaneously in charging infrastructure and intelligent fleet management are expected to realise greater environmental and financial benefits over time.

For commuters, the new buses are expected to provide quieter journeys, reduced tailpipe pollution and improved travel comfort. Public transport specialists argue that modern electric fleets can also enhance the attractiveness of bus-based mobility, encouraging a shift away from private vehicles and easing congestion on urban roads. As Pune continues expanding its public transport network through metro rail, bus services and multimodal connectivity, the addition of electric buses represents another step towards creating a cleaner, more efficient and integrated mobility system. Urban planners believe sustained investment in zero-emission transport, supported by renewable energy and resilient infrastructure, will play a critical role in shaping the city’s long-term sustainable development strategy.
