Pune: The trial of a new double-decker electric bus for Pune’s public transport network has been rescheduled, delaying an assessment that could influence the future of high-capacity, zero-emission mobility in the city. The evaluation is expected to examine whether the vehicle can operate efficiently on selected corridors that currently lack Metro or Bus Rapid Transit connectivity, helping shape future investments in sustainable urban transport.
The postponed exercise is part of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd.’s broader effort to determine whether double decker electric bus services can complement the city’s expanding public transport ecosystem. Officials are expected to announce revised trial dates later this week after deferring the scheduled run without providing a detailed explanation. Unlike earlier evaluations, the upcoming test will focus on corridors outside the existing Metro and BRT networks. Routes linking areas such as Hadapsar, Wagholi and Swargate have been shortlisted to study passenger demand, operational flexibility and the practical suitability of deploying larger electric buses in neighbourhoods where commuters continue to depend primarily on road-based public transport. Transport planners believe selecting non-Metro corridors will provide more accurate data on whether high-capacity buses can bridge mobility gaps in rapidly developing suburbs. As Pune continues to witness residential expansion beyond established transit corridors, integrating efficient feeder and standalone bus services has become increasingly important for reducing private vehicle dependence and easing road congestion.
The revised route strategy follows an earlier pilot conducted along the Hinjewadi corridor, where significant changes in transport infrastructure have since altered commuting patterns. With Metro services now operating on that stretch, transport authorities concluded that further testing should be shifted to areas where rail-based alternatives are currently unavailable. The earlier pilot also highlighted operational considerations that required additional evaluation before any procurement decision could be taken. Industry experts note that double decker electric bus systems offer several advantages in densely populated urban areas. By increasing passenger capacity without expanding road space requirements, they can improve fleet efficiency while supporting cleaner urban mobility. However, successful deployment depends on factors including road geometry, bridge clearances, turning radii, traffic conditions, passenger demand and charging infrastructure.
