Tamil Nadu Weekend Transport Boost Supports Commuters
Tamil Nadu is expanding its intercity public transport network for the upcoming weekend by deploying 1,635 special bus services, a move aimed at easing travel demand as thousands of residents head to their hometowns and return after the weekend. The temporary increase in capacity reflects the growing dependence on road-based public transport and highlights the importance of strengthening reliable, affordable mobility across the State.
The additional services will operate between July 24 and July 26, supplementing regular schedules across major transport corridors. Advance reservations have already crossed 15,900 passengers, indicating sustained demand for organised public transport during weekends, particularly from Chennai and other large urban centres where migrant workers, students and families regularly travel. The largest concentration of additional services has been planned from Kilambakkam Bus Terminus, which continues to emerge as Chennai’s principal long-distance bus hub. Hundreds of extra departures have been scheduled towards key destinations including Tiruchy, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Erode, Tirupur, Kumbakonam and Tiruvannamalai. Services have also been increased from Koyambedu for routes connecting Bengaluru, Hosur, Nagapattinam and Velankanni, while Madhavaram will receive additional departures to northern Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry.
Transport officials have also planned return operations on Sunday, with several hundred additional buses expected to bring passengers back to Chennai, Bengaluru and other employment centres. Authorities anticipate reservation numbers to rise further as the weekend approaches, prompting operational teams to closely monitor passenger movement at major terminals.The Tamil Nadu special buses initiative underscores the continuing role of state-run transport in supporting regional economic activity.
