Pune Dangerous Trees Raise Monsoon Safety Concerns
Pune: Hundreds of ageing and visibly unstable trees across Pune have emerged as a growing public safety concern during the monsoon, with residents urging the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to undertake a comprehensive dangerous tree survey before further accidents occur. The issue has renewed debate over preventive urban tree management, balancing public safety with the protection of the city’s green cover.
Although Pune’s environmental records indicate that the city has nearly 1.4 million trees, urban experts say the absence of updated health assessments for mature trees limits the civic body’s ability to identify those at risk of collapsing during periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds. Instead of preventive inspections, residents claim tree pruning often begins only after major incidents cause injuries, traffic disruption or damage to public infrastructure. Several neighbourhoods, including Parvati, Hadapsar, Sinhagad Road, Right Mutha Canal Road, Prabhat Road, Navi Peth, Law College Road, Lokmanya Nagar and Sahakarnagar, have reported leaning trees, weakened branches and vegetation entangled with electricity lines. Such conditions increase the likelihood of branch failures, power disruptions and road accidents, particularly during intense monsoon spells when saturated soil reduces tree stability.
Urban forestry specialists emphasise that a dangerous tree survey should extend beyond routine branch trimming. Scientific assessments involving root stability, trunk health, canopy balance and soil conditions are considered essential for determining whether a tree requires pruning, structural support, transplantation or removal. Experts caution that indiscriminate branch cutting can sometimes destabilise mature trees by altering their natural weight distribution. Recent incidents in Pune have highlighted the risks posed by ageing roadside trees. Residents point to accidents involving falling trees and branches that have caused injuries to pedestrians and motorists during previous monsoon seasons. Such events have intensified calls for systematic inspections before the onset of heavy rains rather than reactive maintenance after emergencies occur. Environmental planners argue that urban tree management should integrate safety with ecological conservation. Mature trees provide significant environmental benefits by reducing urban heat, absorbing carbon emissions, supporting biodiversity and improving air quality. However, maintaining these benefits requires continuous monitoring supported by digital tree inventories, geospatial mapping and periodic structural audits instead of emergency interventions alone.
Experts also recommend closer coordination between the municipal garden department, electricity utilities and disaster management authorities to identify trees that threaten overhead power infrastructure or obstruct emergency access routes. Technology such as GIS-based tree mapping and risk classification systems can help civic agencies prioritise high-risk locations while preserving healthy trees. As climate change increases the frequency of extreme rainfall and high-wind events, proactive urban forestry is becoming a critical component of resilient city planning. Urban planners believe Pune’s long-term sustainability depends not only on expanding green cover but also on investing in scientific maintenance practices that protect both citizens and the city’s valuable natural assets throughout the year.
