Pune Advances Major Urban Transport Projects

Pune: Maharashtra has intensified efforts to advance a series of strategic transport projects aimed at reshaping mobility across the Pune metropolitan region, with state authorities directing faster execution of planning, approvals and land acquisition. The renewed focus covers the proposed HCMTR corridor, Internal Ring Road and an urban tunnel network, reflecting growing urgency to address congestion while preparing the city for long-term population and economic growth.

The decisions emerged from a high-level review involving state departments and urban agencies responsible for transport planning, civic administration and metropolitan development. Officials assessed implementation timelines, institutional coordination and project readiness, signalling a stronger emphasis on synchronising multiple infrastructure initiatives rather than progressing them independently. At the centre of the review is the proposed HCMTR corridor, a 43.6-kilometre elevated urban transport route designed to improve east-west and north-south connectivity through some of Pune’s busiest urban districts. Planned as a six-lane corridor, the project is intended to complement the expanding Metro network and create an integrated transport system capable of easing pressure on existing arterial roads.

The proposed investment, estimated at around ₹12,000 crore, includes significant expenditure on construction alongside land acquisition required for the alignment. Authorities have been instructed to finalise the financial framework while simultaneously accelerating statutory clearances and property acquisition so that physical work can commence without prolonged administrative delays. Urban mobility specialists have consistently argued that isolated transport projects deliver only limited benefits unless they function as part of a connected network. Integrating the HCMTR corridor with Metro services, major roads and future transit infrastructure could encourage greater public transport use, shorten travel times and improve accessibility between residential, commercial and industrial districts. Such integration is also expected to strengthen economic productivity by reducing logistics delays and commuter travel costs. The Internal Ring Road and proposed urban tunnel system are expected to complement this strategy by diverting through traffic away from densely populated areas and improving movement across rapidly expanding suburban zones. Together, these projects aim to support more balanced urban growth while reducing dependence on overloaded city roads.

Urban planners note that successful delivery will depend not only on engineering execution but also on coordinated governance, timely rehabilitation where required and careful environmental management during construction. Balancing infrastructure expansion with sustainable land use and minimising disruption to neighbourhoods will remain essential as the projects move into implementation. State authorities have indicated an ambition to complete the elevated transit corridor by 2028, provided financial planning, approvals and acquisition activities remain on schedule. For a city experiencing sustained growth in employment, housing and industrial investment, the coming months will be critical in determining whether these long-envisioned mobility projects can translate into measurable improvements in connectivity, liveability and climate-resilient urban transport.
