Pre-Monsoon Survey MCD Flags Delhi’s Risky Buildings

As the monsoon season approaches, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has undertaken a comprehensive survey across its zones to assess the structural integrity of residential buildings. The initiative, aimed at safeguarding residents from potential hazards, has identified over 17.94 lakh houses, with particular focus on those deemed in urgent need of repair or classified as dangerous.

According to recent data compiled by the MCD, the survey has covered approximately 64% of the targeted houses, with notable progress in zones such as South Zone and Karol Bagh. Najafgarh emerged with the highest number of surveyed houses at 2,41,931, followed closely by South Zone and Central Zone, underscoring the widespread scope of the assessment exercise.

The survey’s findings highlight significant concerns, with four buildings already classified as dangerous and requiring immediate attention to prevent collapse. In specific instances, one house in Shahdara South and three buildings in Rohini have been flagged under categories A (Maintenance) and B (Building), respectively, indicating critical structural vulnerabilities.

Notably, the identification of these risky structures was accelerated during a focused 14-day period from June 1 to June 14, underscoring the urgency ahead of the impending monsoon arrival in Delhi by the end of this month, as forecasted by the weather department.

Despite these alarming findings, details regarding the actions taken against the identified buildings remain undisclosed by MCD officials. The ongoing process aims to extend the survey’s coverage to mitigate potential risks and ensure public safety amidst adverse weather conditions.

With a total of 27,66,198 houses under its jurisdiction across 12 zones, the MCD’s proactive approach in conducting surveys and promptly addressing structural deficiencies reflects its commitment to enhancing urban safety standards. Earlier efforts had already surveyed approximately 12.19 lakh houses by May 31, with an additional 5,74,198 houses scrutinized in the recent intensified phase.

Looking ahead, the MCD’s vigilance and swift actions underscore its dedication to preemptive measures, aiming to secure Delhi’s residential landscape against the challenges posed by the monsoon season. As the survey progresses, stakeholders anticipate continued efforts to safeguard communities and uphold structural integrity across the city’s diverse neighbourhoods.
