Prayag Junction Transformed: A New Era of Accessibility and Sustainability

The Northern Railway is implementing the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which seeks to refurbish and modernise a staggering 1,308 railway stations across the country. Among the prominent beneficiaries of this scheme is the Prayag Junction Railway Station, strategically located in the Lucknow division and steeped in historical significance.

With a sanctioned budget of ₹38.56 crores, Prayag Junction is set to undergo a comprehensive redevelopment that promises to significantly enhance the passenger experience. Central to this overhaul is the establishment of a spacious circulating area designed to alleviate traffic congestion during peak travel periods, notably during major events such as the Mahakumbh. A main entry point and a secondary entry on the side will facilitate smoother access, with strategically placed hangars to accommodate travellers and reduce crowding. The redevelopment plan encompasses not only functional improvements but also aesthetic enhancements. Existing structures will be renovated, and new buildings will be constructed to elevate both accessibility and visual appeal. Local architectural styles will be woven into the modern facade, creating a sense of cultural continuity and heritage.

In line with contemporary expectations, the station will be equipped with a host of modern amenities. These include wider roads within the circulating area, the creation of green spaces, and the installation of advanced drainage systems to ensure both safety and efficiency. Standard signage and real-time display boards will provide essential information, aiding navigation for all passengers.

Inclusivity is a cornerstone of the redevelopment initiative, with provisions for passengers with disabilities being integrated throughout the station. Features such as Divyang-Jan-friendly amenities, LED station-name boards, and GPS-enabled clocks will ensure that all travellers can navigate the station with ease. Moreover, the project aims to cater to diverse passenger needs by introducing commercial facilities, including a food plaza and retail outlets. Emphasis on hygiene is evident in the improvement of toilet facilities, designed to accommodate the requirements of passengers with disabilities.

The vision for Prayag Junction extends beyond mere infrastructure upgrades. It embodies the fundamental principles of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which focuses on creating vibrant, sustainable transportation hubs that prioritise inclusivity, efficiency, and safety. Through these efforts, the Northern Railway aims to redefine the travel experience, fostering a new era of seamless and enjoyable railway journeys for all. The Ministry of Railways has highlighted the rapid progress of this redevelopment, showcasing the modernised station’s aesthetic appeal and upgraded facilities. As Prayag Junction prepares to embrace its new identity, it stands as a testament to the Indian Railways’ commitment to enhancing passenger experience while fostering a sustainable travel environment.
