PMRDA Targets Illegal Hoardings in Hinjewadi

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has taken a significant step towards regulating the landscape of the Hinjewadi IT park and surrounding areas by finalising a contractor for the removal of unauthorised hoardings. This move, which encompasses nine tehsils including Mulshi, aims to address the rampant proliferation of illegal advertisement boards and signboards.

A recent survey conducted by PMRDA identified approximately 1,000 unauthorised hoardings in the first phase of the initiative. Violators were promptly issued notices, urging them to seek proper approvals to regularise their hoardings. The tender process to appoint a contractor encountered hurdles, failing twice before succeeding on the third attempt. The opening of tenders was delayed due to the Lok Sabha election Model Code of Conduct but was finally completed on June 10. Harshada Constructions emerged as the successful bidder, securing the contract for the Pune district.

An official from PMRDA confirmed that the order will be finalised upon receiving necessary approvals. The crackdown will be executed in phases across the nine talukas under PMRDA’s jurisdiction, beginning with Mulshi. This area has reported several incidents of falling hoardings in the past year. Local gram panchayats have been requested to provide relevant information to support the operation.

Historically, the absence of a dedicated sky-sign licence department within PMRDA allowed the unchecked spread of unauthorised hoardings. However, with a new regulatory framework now in place, PMRDA anticipates generating additional revenue. Confiscated hoarding structures will be sold, with 35 per cent of the proceeds allocated to PMRDA by the contractor.

In an effort to regularise unauthorised hoardings, PMRDA invited applications from violators, receiving around 341 responses from various villages. Mulshi and Maval talukas recorded the highest number of applications, with notable submissions including 76 from Hinjewadi, 26 from Bhugaon, 19 from Mann, and 15 from Bhukum. These applications have been submitted to the Commissioner for approval.

The impending crackdown, particularly in areas like Hinjewadi and Mann, has created a sense of urgency among those operating illegally. This initiative follows PMRDA’s recent actions against unauthorised pubs, hotels, and resto-bars in Hinjewadi, shifting the focus now to hoardings and putting violators on high alert.

PMRDA’s robust approach underscores its commitment to maintaining an orderly urban environment and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. By addressing the issue of illegal hoardings, the authority not only aims to enhance the aesthetic of the region but also to ensure public safety and adherence to legal requirements. This initiative is expected to set a precedent for stringent enforcement and regulatory oversight in the region, promoting a more disciplined and compliant urban landscape.
