Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has implemented a revised fare structure, transitioning from a 40-stage to an 11-stage system.
This overhaul aims to simplify fare calculations, enhance integration with Pune Metro services, and align with digital ticketing platforms, including the National Common Mobility Card system The new fare system categorizes travel distances into six stages for journeys up to 30 km, segmented at 5 km intervals, and five stages for distances between 30 km and 80 km, segmented at 10 km intervals. This replaces the previous model, which had 40 stages based on 2 km intervals.
PMPML officials stated that this restructuring is designed to bring clarity and fairness to commuters while improving operational efficiency. The simplified structure is expected to facilitate seamless integration with Pune Metro, ensuring accurate fare calculations and compatibility with e-ticketing systems. In addition to the fare stage revision, PMPML has updated its pass system. The existing daily pass priced at ₹40 and the monthly pass at ₹900, previously valid within Pune or Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits, have been discontinued. A unified daily pass covering both cities is now available at ₹70, and a monthly pass at ₹1,500. For the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) area, the daily pass has been reduced from ₹120 to ₹115. Passes for students, senior citizens, and differently-abled commuters remain unchanged.
To enhance its fleet, PMPML is set to receive 500 new CNG buses, funded by a ₹230 crore provision from the PMRDA. An additional 500 CNG buses will be procured through a self-ownership model, based on proportional ownership between the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad civic bodies. This expansion aims to improve service reliability and meet the growing demand for public transportation in the region. In efforts to manage rising operational costs, the PMPML board has approved hiring certain categories of staff on a contractual basis. This decision is expected to optimize resource allocation and reduce salary expenditures, contributing to the organization’s financial sustainability.
The fare revision and associated changes were approved during the PMPML Board meeting held on May 13, 2025, attended by senior officials, including commissioners from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations, the Regional Transport Officer (Pune), and the Director of the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT). These comprehensive measures reflect PMPML’s commitment to modernizing public transportation, promoting sustainable mobility, and enhancing the overall commuter experience in Pune and its surrounding regions.
