The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed the construction of 10 double decker flyovers along key metro corridors.
This ambitious plan aims to streamline traffic flow, reduce congestion, and integrate seamlessly with the city’s expanding metro network.
The proposed flyovers are strategically located at critical junctions, including:
-
Mundhwa Mahatma Phule Chowk
-
Kalubai Chowk on Solapur Road
-
Dandekar Pul Chowk
-
Wagholi Awhalwadi Chowk
-
Ambedkar Chowk in Warje
-
Kothrud Bus Depot in Bhusari Colony
-
Golibar Maidan Chowk
-
Viman Nagar Chowk
-
Wanowrie Fatimanagar Chowk
-
Ravidarshan in Manjari
These locations have been identified based on traffic density, potential for congestion relief, and their proximity to existing or proposed metro routes.
The PMC plans to collaborate closely with the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) for the construction of these flyovers. The proposed double decker flyovers will have the upper deck dedicated to metro rail operations, while the lower deck will cater to vehicular traffic. This integrated approach ensures optimal utilization of space and resources. For instance, the double decker flyover at Karve Road’s Nal Stop, a joint venture between PMC and Maha-Metro, serves as a successful model. The flyover facilitates smooth vehicular movement on the lower deck, while the upper deck accommodates the metro rail, demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of such projects.
The estimated cost for constructing the first tier (vehicular flyover) of these proposed flyovers is approximately ₹60 crore for Mundhwa Mahatma Phule Chowk, ₹35 crore for Kalubai Chowk on Solapur Road, and ₹45 crore for Dandekar Pul Chowk. The PMC intends to fund these expenses, while the costs associated with the second tier (metro rail deck) will be borne by the metro project funds. Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale emphasized the importance of developing these flyovers in tandem with metro construction to prevent future infrastructure challenges. “Constructing integrated flyovers before the metro’s elevated structures ensures that we don’t face obstructions when upgrading road infrastructure,” he stated.
To ensure the practicality and effectiveness of these projects, the PMC is conducting detailed feasibility studies. These studies will assess factors such as traffic patterns, environmental impact, and integration with existing infrastructure. The findings will inform the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for each flyover, guiding the planning and execution phases. The proposed double decker flyovers represent a forward-thinking approach to urban transportation planning in Pune. By aligning road infrastructure development with metro expansion, the PMC aims to create a cohesive and efficient transportation network that meets the city’s growing demands. As the feasibility studies progress and the DPRs are finalized, these projects are set to play a pivotal role in shaping Pune’s future urban landscape.
