PMAY-G beneficiaries in Himachal Pradesh can now self-geo-tag their under-construction houses through the Awaas mobile application, a change intended to speed up the processing of subsequent housing instalments while retaining official verification at the block level.
The facility allows beneficiaries to upload details showing the progress of construction directly through the app and initiate the process for release of the next instalment. Earlier, geo-tagging at different stages of construction was carried out only by departmental field officials.
Rural development department officials said the new submissions would not automatically trigger payment. Officials of the concerned development block will verify and approve the geo-tagged construction updates before the next instalment can be processed.
Beneficiaries can access the facility using their PMAY-G registration ID, registered mobile number, Aadhaar or NREGA job card. Each of these login options requires OTP-based verification, according to the department.
The change is designed to give beneficiaries a direct role in documenting construction progress, reducing their dependence on the physical availability and schedules of field officials for the initial submission. However, the final decision on whether the construction stage qualifies for the next instalment will continue to rest with the designated government officials.
Beneficiaries who have changed their mobile numbers will have to get their details updated at the concerned block office before using the application. The requirement links access to the digital facility with the accuracy of beneficiary records maintained by local administration.
The self-geo-tagging option is currently voluntary. The earlier system, under which departmental officials geo-tag houses during different stages of construction, will continue alongside the new facility. Beneficiaries who do not use the application themselves can therefore continue to rely on the existing process.
The department has directed field officials to publicise the facility, distribute or share standard operating procedures and guide beneficiaries in using the Awaas application. This support will be important in determining how widely the digital option is used, particularly among beneficiaries who may face difficulties with mobile access, OTP authentication or uploading construction information.
PMAY-G instalments are released as construction progresses, making timely recording of each stage important for households building homes under the rural housing programme. The new process does not remove the block-level approval requirement, but it creates an additional route through which construction updates can reach the department.
The department’s next steps are to promote the facility among beneficiaries, provide guidance on the standard operating procedure and continue verification through officials at the concerned development blocks.
