The Peroorkada flyover project in Thiruvananthapuram has moved closer to full construction after test piling began and the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK) approved the contractor’s design and construction estimates. The 874.7-metre, two-lane flyover is planned to connect the Peroorkada side near Lourdes Church with the Vazhayila side near St Jude Church.
RBDCK is implementing the project, which is being funded with support from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). A senior RBDCK official said the test piling was under way and that the main piling work was expected to begin after its completion. The contractor, Cherian Varkey Constructions Ltd, is also expected to start the main construction work shortly, according to the report.
The latest design approval has cleared a key technical stage for the project. The construction tender includes the flyover as well as approach roads, service roads, drains and culverts. Although the tender document prescribed a 730-day construction period, officials have said the project is now planned for completion within about 18 months after full-scale work begins.
The project’s revised financial sanction was accorded by KIIFB in December 2025. The work was awarded to Cherian Varkey Constructions in March 2026, and the agreement was signed in June, according to project details cited by the report.
The construction milestone follows several delays since the foundation stone was laid in November 2021. Land acquisition, demolition of structures and changes to the project design had held up implementation. The original proposal for an underpass was later changed to a flyover after underground water pipelines were found along the proposed alignment.
Land acquisition has now been substantially completed. Compensation has been paid to affected landowners, and most structures on the acquired plots have been cleared. The junction is a major traffic bottleneck because roads towards Nedumangad, Kudappanakunnu and other eastern suburbs converge there. The proposed grade-separated corridor is intended to improve traffic movement through the junction. Main piling is expected to follow the completion of the ongoing test piling, after which full-scale construction will proceed.
