Patna Heritage Restoration Begins at Miller High School Water Tank

The Bihar government has begun the restoration and beautification of the historic water tank at Miller High School in Patna, with plans for a circular pathway, landscaping, modern lighting and a cafeteria for visitors. Chief minister Samrat Choudhary laid the foundation stone for the project on Wednesday and inspected the premises after the ceremony.

The initiative will preserve the old water tank without disturbing its original form, while improving the surrounding public amenities. The state government said the project is intended to protect an important historical landmark, improve the appearance of the capital and develop the Miller High School campus as an organised heritage site.

Choudhary said the government was committed to strengthening urban infrastructure, preserving historical sites and improving public facilities. During his inspection, he issued instructions to officials involved in the restoration plan.

Under the project, a circular pathway will be constructed around the water tank. The premises will also receive landscaping and modern lighting. A contemporary cafeteria building will be added for tourists and other visitors to the site. Officials said these additions would improve access and make the campus more usable while retaining the tank’s original architectural form.

The work will be implemented by Bihar’s urban development and housing department in coordination with the Patna Municipal Corporation. PMC commissioner Yashpal Meena presented the restoration and beautification plan to the chief minister and explained the proposed interventions.

Meena said the project would use traditional, durable and structure-compatible materials. The restoration plan follows the principle of minimum intervention and maximum preservation of the original architectural form, according to officials. A video film showing the proposed restoration and beautification work was also screened during the programme.

The project places a historic water structure within a broader civic improvement plan for the Miller High School campus. Its stated objectives combine conservation with visitor facilities, landscaping and better lighting, rather than treating the water tank as an isolated structure.

Urban development and housing minister Nitish Mishra, MP Ravishankar Prasad, MLAs Sanjeev Chaurasia and Ratnesh Kumar, Patna mayor Sita Sahu and deputy mayor Reshmi Chandravanshi were present at the foundation stone-laying ceremony. The restoration will proceed under the supervision of the urban development and housing department and the Patna Municipal Corporation.
