Buxar Memorial Gate Gets Foundation Stone, Family Seeks More Support

A memorial gate honouring Army martyr Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh has received its foundation stone at Narbatpur under Chausa Nagar Panchayat in Buxar, with the Rs 7.5 lakh project being funded by Bihar’s urban development and housing department. The ceremony was attended by RJD MP Sudhakar Singh, MLC Sonu Rai, family members and local residents.

The memorial gate is intended to commemorate Singh, who died after sustaining severe shrapnel injuries while responding to Pakistani shelling and a drone attack in the Rajouri sector of Jammu and Kashmir. According to the report, he was critically injured during Operation Sindoor on May 9, 2025, and continued relaying information about enemy drones despite his injuries.

Singh succumbed to his injuries on June 6, 2025, after battling for life for 27 days. He was later posthumously awarded the Sena Medal (Gallantry). His wife, Sujata Devi, received the award at an Army Day ceremony in Jaipur.

The foundation stone ceremony followed a long-standing demand from Singh’s family for a public memorial. His father, Janardan Singh, said the family had been seeking a structure to honour his son’s service and sacrifice.

Speaking at the event, Sudhakar Singh described the memorial gate as the first step towards commemorating the martyr. He also assured the family that a dedicated memorial would be constructed in the future. The report did not specify a completion date for the gate or provide details of the proposed dedicated memorial.

The project places a public memorial within the jurisdiction of Chausa Nagar Panchayat and links the commemoration to the state’s urban development and housing administration. The use of departmental funding means that the gate is also a civic works project involving public expenditure, alongside its role as a tribute to a local soldier.

Family members said several demands remained pending despite assurances from public representatives and officials. These include the construction of a permanent memorial and support for Singh’s children. They said action on some of the issues was still awaited.

The foundation stone marks the immediate milestone reported for the memorial gate. The next stated step is the construction of the gate, while a dedicated memorial and assistance for the martyr’s children remain commitments or demands without a reported implementation timeline.
