Palakkarai Residents Decry Subpar UGD Work

Residents of Palakkarai have voiced strong criticism towards the Trichy Corporation regarding the substandard closure of pits excavated for the installation of underground drainage (UGD) pipelines.

The situation worsened with recent summer showers, which transformed the uneven roads into swampy stretches, posing significant safety hazards. The installation of UGD pipelines in Annai Nagar, located in ward 32 of Palakkarai, was reportedly completed in a hurried manner. This hasty execution left many pits inadequately filled, leading to soil erosion into open stormwater drains. This has disrupted the wastewater flow in the low-lying areas, exacerbating the problem.

“Yesterday’s (Wednesday) rains have aggravated our problems. Pedestrians are unable to access Annai Nagar streets. Senior citizens are suffering since the roads are slippery. Corporation should have closed the UGD pits properly,”

The looming forecast of more rain over the next few days has heightened the residents’ concerns. They have urged the corporation officials to conduct thorough inspections of the roads where the UGD works were recently completed. As a temporary measure, the residents have suggested using a gravel mixture to re-lay and fortify the roads.

The poor condition of the roads has deterred autorickshaw and cab operators from servicing the area, further inconveniencing the residents. The local populace has demanded immediate remedial action to ensure safety and restore normalcy. The Trichy Corporation has acknowledged the grievances and assured that they will investigate the issue promptly.

This incident highlights the critical need for meticulous planning and execution of public infrastructure projects. The repercussions of subpar work not only disrupt daily life but also pose serious safety risks, underscoring the necessity for stringent quality checks and prompt corrective measures. The residents’ call for accountability and swift action reflects the broader demand for improved governance and infrastructure management.
