Overnight Rain Triggers Widespread Power Outages in Chennai

Chennai experienced significant power outages on Monday night as sudden showers and strong winds disrupted electricity supply across the city and its suburbs. The inclement weather led to the snapping of overhead cables and the failure of insulators, resulting in widespread blackouts.

The southern parts of the city, including Taramani, Velachery, Madipakkam, and Thoraipakkam, were among the most affected areas. In the suburban regions, prolonged power cuts were reported in Avadi, Mogappair, Tambaram, and surrounding localities. Within the city, residents of Mandavelipakkam endured power outages until Tuesday evening. Frustrated residents reported a lack of communication from Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) personnel regarding the restoration timelines. In areas such as Velachery and Madipakkam, power was cut off around 2am and was not restored until after 10am. A resident of Avadi shared his frustration, stating, “For one hour of rain, we suffered without power for about six hours.” He further noted that the outage affected schoolchildren and office-goers as water tanks ran dry due to the lack of electricity.

Tangedco field officials acknowledged the cause of the power cuts, citing flashing insulators in transformers, tripping feeders, and overhead cables snapping due to falling tree branches. Despite the challenges, Tangedco personnel worked diligently to restore power, with most areas regaining electricity before 7am. However, in some localities, restoration efforts continued until 4pm. Officials attributed the failures to a backlog in regular maintenance work over the past few months. They explained that the focus on school board exams, the summer season, and the Lok Sabha elections had delayed essential maintenance activities, exacerbating the impact of the sudden rainfall. The situation highlighted the vulnerability of the city’s power infrastructure to weather-related disruptions and underscored the need for regular maintenance and timely upgrades. As residents voiced their concerns and frustrations, Tangedco faced increased pressure to enhance communication and expedite the restoration of services during such emergencies.
