Indian Railways has launched its first 20-coach Vande Bharat Express on the Howrah-Puri route. This semi-high-speed train, which replaces its 16-coach predecessor, promises to drastically reduce travel times while also offering a significant boost in passenger capacity.

The new 502-kilometre stretch, which now includes more coaches and modern amenities, is set to become a game-changer for the state, enhancing both commuter and tourist connectivity. Manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the 20-coach Vande Bharat Express embodies cutting-edge technology and efficient design, and is expected to carry up to 85,000 passengers annually. The introduction of the longer train on this route reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to modernising the country’s rail network, making travel faster, more comfortable, and sustainable.

The Howrah-Puri route, which connects Odisha with West Bengal, has long been a key artery for both daily commuters and pilgrims heading to the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri. The 20-coach Vande Bharat is expected to significantly enhance this connectivity, offering improved service on a route that sees heavy footfall. The journey, which previously took up to 7 hours, is now streamlined to 6 hours and 40 minutes, making it an attractive option for time-sensitive passengers. One of the most notable upgrades with the 20-coach Vande Bharat Express is its focus on passenger comfort. The train offers two classes: AC Chair Car and Executive AC, priced at ₹1,245 and ₹2,400 respectively. Key features such as rotatable seats in the Executive Class, large panoramic windows, on-board Wi-Fi, and infotainment systems are designed to elevate the travel experience. The spacious interiors, ample legroom, and overhead luggage racks add to the convenience, ensuring passengers can travel in comfort.

The train is also equipped with catering services that provide meals during the journey, further enhancing the passenger experience. With its modern, sleek design and efficiency, the Vande Bharat Express is poised to redefine train travel for both local commuters and tourists, especially in the context of the region’s growing economic and tourism sectors. The launch of this 20-coach model is part of a broader strategy to enhance regional transport infrastructure and cater to rising passenger demand. Odisha has seen steady growth in both business and tourism, and the Vande Bharat Express will help accommodate this growth. Key stations along the route, including Kharagpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Bhubaneswar, will now serve as enhanced hubs for connectivity, making it easier for people to travel between Odisha and West Bengal.

The introduction of such state-of-the-art services also speaks to India’s broader goals for a sustainable transport future. The semi-high-speed train is designed with a focus on efficiency, using technology that promises lower carbon emissions compared to traditional travel methods. The incorporation of eco-friendly features reflects Indian Railways’ growing commitment to cleaner and greener transport options as the country moves towards its climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. Moreover, this upgrade to Odisha’s transport network is likely to have a far-reaching impact on the state’s economy. Not only will it facilitate faster and more comfortable travel for businesspeople and tourists, but it will also contribute to job creation in the region. The increased connectivity will open up new opportunities for local businesses and communities near the stations, fostering economic growth and development.

The 20-coach Vande Bharat Express is a significant step forward for Indian Railways, reinforcing its pledge to modernise the country’s railways while also boosting sustainable growth and improving passenger experience. As Odisha continues to grow as a hub for tourism and commerce, the introduction of this high-speed rail service is poised to play a vital role in shaping its future infrastructure.
