Odisha Heavy Rain Warning: 5 Districts Face Orange Alert

Odisha has issued an orange warning for very heavy rainfall in Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam on November 3, with thunderstorms and winds expected to reach 50-60 kmph and gust up to 70 kmph, according to a report by The Samaja – Bhubaneswar citing the weather department.

The warning has been issued in connection with Cyclone Murasu. The five districts in southern Odisha are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain on November 3, while strong winds could affect road travel, power infrastructure and exposed construction activity in vulnerable areas.

Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Puri and Khordha are also forecast to receive heavy rain on the same day. Winds in these districts may reach 50-60 kmph, with gusts touching 70 kmph in some locations, the report said.

The weather department has extended the orange warning for Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam to November 4. These districts may again experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, alongside winds of 50-60 kmph and localised gusts of up to 70 kmph.

The warning covers a mix of hilly, coastal and urbanising districts. Intense rain in southern Odisha can place pressure on roads, culverts, drainage systems and electricity networks, while strong winds may create additional risks for commuters and residents in areas with exposed structures. The report, however, does not provide details of expected rainfall totals, road closures, school advisories or evacuation measures.

The next operational steps will depend on district-level administration and weather updates as the system approaches. Residents and transport operators in the warned districts should follow advisories issued by the weather department and local authorities.
