Large parts of both cities witnessed prolonged electricity disruptions after rain, hail and gusty winds damaged feeders, uprooted trees and brought down utility poles, affecting residential neighbourhoods and raising concerns over climate resilience in rapidly expanding NCR suburbs.
Power supply interruptions were reported across multiple sectors in Noida, Greater Noida West and Ghaziabad after high-voltage lines and distribution equipment suffered damage during the afternoon storm. Utility officials said emergency shutdowns were carried out in several locations to prevent accidents where fallen branches and hoardings had come into contact with live wires. The disruption followed another night of outages earlier in the week, when technical faults in transmission feeders affected residential pockets including high-density housing sectors in Noida. Residents in several apartment clusters reported electricity cuts stretching late into the night during peak summer humidity, intensifying concerns around urban liveability and the reliability of essential services during extreme weather events. In parts of Ghaziabad, feeder failures linked to damaged 33 kV lines impacted localities in Indirapuram, Vaishali and Vasundhara.
Distribution teams were deployed to inspect substations and restore damaged circuits once weather conditions stabilised. Officials familiar with the restoration effort said safety inspections of 11 kV feeder lines were necessary before reconnecting supply in densely populated residential areas. The latest outages come as NCR cities face increasingly erratic pre-monsoon weather patterns linked to rising heat stress and changing climate conditions. Meteorological data indicates that intermittent rain during early April helped moderate temperatures across Delhi-NCR, delaying extended heatwave conditions. However, urban planners warn that ageing overhead distribution systems remain highly exposed to storms, particularly in fast-growing peripheral sectors where infrastructure upgrades have struggled to keep pace with real estate expansion. The storm also caused widespread damage to roadside trees, boundary structures and local streets, disrupting mobility in parts of Noida, Dadri and Jewar.
Residents reported delays in civic response as maintenance teams worked simultaneously across multiple locations to clear debris and secure damaged utility infrastructure. Energy and infrastructure experts say the recurring nature of these outages points to the need for more climate-resilient urban systems, including underground cabling, decentralised energy backup and better coordination between electricity providers and municipal authorities during extreme weather incidents. With NCR’s urban footprint expanding rapidly, dependence on vulnerable overhead infrastructure could increase economic and social risks during future climate-linked events. While temperatures dropped significantly after the rain spell, bringing cooler conditions across the region, the disruptions highlighted a larger challenge facing Indian cities: balancing rapid urban growth with reliable, resilient and citizen-focused infrastructure systems capable of withstanding intensifying weather variability.
