The much-anticipated Noida International Airport at Jewar, positioned as a game-changer for Uttar Pradesh’s infrastructure and economic landscape, has missed its third official deadline.
Originally scheduled for operational readiness by 15 May 2025, the project has now slipped beyond this date, leaving stakeholders, investors, and residents in a state of mounting frustration. The new launch date will be declared soon, according to Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, who conducted a field review this week.This marks the third such delay for the Greenfield airport, following earlier missed targets of 29 September 2024 and 25 April 2025. The repeated deferments have raised concerns about the pace of progress despite high-level monitoring and the project’s designation as a top priority for the state government. The Chief Secretary, while chairing a meeting with key stakeholders including Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL), and Tata Projects Limited, underscored the urgency of expediting construction while ensuring that quality benchmarks are not compromised.

With over ₹29,560 crore estimated to be pumped into the airport over multiple phases, the delay is more than just a timeline setback—it risks denting investor confidence in Uttar Pradesh’s infrastructure narrative. The airport, once complete, is expected to handle 12 million passengers annually in its first phase, with projections to scale up to 70 million by 2040. But with civil works at the terminal, runway, and cargo facilities still incomplete, this vision seems increasingly distant. The development is crucial not only for air connectivity but also for enhancing regional economic activity, logistics, and tourism in the National Capital Region (NCR).During the site visit, Singh insisted on real-time reviews and no compromises in construction standards.
Officials from YIAPL and Tata Projects updated him on ongoing work, but industry watchers noted a visible lag in critical infrastructure timelines.In the same meeting, key administrative figures including Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) CEO Arun Vir Singh and Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate Manish Verma were present to assess the impact and potential corrective action.The delays may also reflect broader issues in India’s large-scale infrastructure execution—ranging from land acquisition bottlenecks and manpower shortages to delayed funding cycles. While the state maintains that the project is progressing, the ground reality at Jewar points to a significant gap between intent and implementation.
Though the Chief Secretary reaffirmed the state’s commitment, the continued rescheduling of the airport’s launch has led to growing scepticism among citizens and civil society, especially as the project has been marketed as a linchpin in India’s sustainable urban transport future.
