Passengers travelling from North Paravur to Ernakulam through Vypin are facing a shortage of night bus services after 8.30 pm, with students, workers and others reporting difficulty reaching their destinations after evening travel.
According to a report by Mathrubhumi, only four buses leave North Paravur for Ernakulam after 7.15 pm. These services begin their trips at 7.23 pm, 7.37 pm, 7.41 pm and 8.17 pm. Four or five additional buses operate partially on the route during this period, but passengers say the available services are not sufficient for late-evening travel.
The shortage is particularly affecting students who travel after tuition classes and pay the full fare, as well as people returning from work and passengers travelling at night for essential purposes. The reported gap is on the North Paravur-to-Ernakulam direction through Vypin, where private buses reportedly stop operating after around 8.30 pm.
The situation is different in the reverse direction. Around 10 buses operate from Ernakulam through Vypin between 8.28 pm and 9.40 pm, according to the report. The imbalance means that passengers travelling towards Ernakulam have fewer options during the later part of the evening, even while buses continue to operate in the opposite direction.
Passengers have suggested that long-distance buses already operating in the area should be permitted to travel through this route. They have also called for Kerala State Road Transport Corporation services through Vypin at half-hour intervals between 8 pm and 10 pm.
The issue highlights the dependence of suburban and island-linked communities on scheduled public transport beyond conventional daytime operating hours. For students and workers, the lack of a dependable evening service can make access to education, employment and essential travel dependent on private vehicles or other arrangements. The report does not specify any confirmed decision by private operators or the state transport corporation on the passengers’ requests.
Passengers are seeking the restoration or expansion of night services between North Paravur and Ernakulam through Vypin, including additional private-bus operations and regular KSRTC trips between 8 pm and 10 pm.
