The Ministry of Railways has approved the construction of a new 5.31 km chord railway line connecting Karhi and Sagma in Madhya Pradesh.
This project, with an estimated cost of ₹165.20 crore, aims to alleviate congestion on the existing Satna-Manikpur-Prayagraj route and enhance the efficiency of rail operations in the region. The current rail line between Satna and Manikpur is operating at 120% capacity utilization, a situation projected to escalate to 143% by 2027. The introduction of the Karhi-Sagma chord line is expected to mitigate this pressure by providing an alternative route for trains, thereby improving overall network efficiency and reducing delays. The new chord line will facilitate direct train services between Manikpur and Panna without the need to pass through Satna Junction. This development is anticipated to streamline operations, reduce transit times, and eliminate the necessity for engine changes at Satna, thereby enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers.
The Karhi-Sagma rail link is poised to stimulate economic activities in the surrounding areas. The region is known for its industrial activities, including cement and mineral industries in Satna and Panna. Improved rail connectivity is expected to facilitate the efficient movement of goods, thereby supporting industrial growth and boosting regional trade. Madhya Pradesh is home to several tourist destinations, including the historic city of Panna and the world-renowned Khajuraho temples. The new rail link is expected to bolster tourism by providing easier access to these attractions, thereby contributing to the state’s tourism revenue and promoting cultural exchange.
