New Delhi NH148A Link From DND Flyway To Sohna To Be Completed By September
The National Highway 148A (NH-148A), a crucial infrastructure project connecting the Delhi-Noida-Direct (DND) Flyway to Sohna, is nearing completion and is expected to open by September this year. With an impressive 93 per cent of the work already finished, this highway expansion is set to significantly alleviate traffic congestion across the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR). Beyond decongestion, the ₹7,084 crore project will establish vital links to the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar and integrate with major expressways, fostering sustainable development and equitable access across a vast economic corridor.
The 91-kilometre expanded stretch of NH-148A is a multifaceted engineering marvel. It comprises a 59-kilometre segment connecting the DND Flyway through Faridabad and Ballabgarh to Sohna, intersecting with NH-19. A critical 32-kilometre spur link road will further connect the flyway directly to the Jewar International Airport, providing seamless last-mile connectivity essential for the airport’s scheduled commencement of operations in 2025. This comprehensive design ensures a direct and efficient bypass for areas traditionally plagued by heavy traffic.
The highway’s elaborate design incorporates a six-lane access-controlled main carriageway flanked by three-lane service roads on both sides. Its structural components are extensive, featuring eight elevated sections spanning over 12 kilometres, alongside ten flyovers, multiple vehicular and light vehicular underpasses, numerous minor bridges, and critical railway crossings. This robust infrastructure is engineered to manage high traffic volumes efficiently, reduce travel times from East, North, and South Delhi to key destinations in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and even distant economic hubs like Jaipur, Mumbai, and Kolkata.
Beyond its direct impact on traffic flow, the NH-148A is poised to serve as a powerful catalyst for regional development. The improved access and significantly reduced travel times are anticipated to unlock new commercial and residential growth opportunities in previously underdeveloped areas such as Kalindi Kunj, Jaitpur, Mithapur, Badarpur, and Ballabgarh. This strategic expansion aligns with the vision of creating sustainable and equitable cities, providing better access to opportunities and services for a wider demographic, and promoting balanced urban growth.
The project is structured into four distinct packages, with key progress noted across each. While Package 2 was completed in September 2024 and Package 3 finished in May 2023, the arch bridge near Kalindi Kunj remains a critical component of Package 1 currently under construction. Future plans also include the extension of Package 4 towards Kota in Rajasthan, indicating a continuous long-term vision for regional infrastructure development. Furthermore, an additional ₹500 crore interchange is being planned for the Kalindi Kunj intersection to further alleviate traffic bottlenecks, with a Detailed Project Report (DPR) already underway.
This extensive network, once fully operational, will seamlessly integrate with major national arteries like the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. This integration will create a high-speed, decongested network that significantly reduces the carbon footprint of freight and passenger traffic by optimising routes and reducing idling time. The NH-148A is not merely a road; it is a strategic economic corridor designed to enhance urban mobility, reduce environmental impact, and foster inclusive development across the sprawling Delhi NCR and beyond.
