Navi Mumbai Treated Water Mandate Expands Across City
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has made the use of Treated Water compulsory for construction sites, private gardens, stadiums and educational institutions in a move aimed at protecting potable water supplies despite the ongoing monsoon. The directive signals a shift towards more sustainable urban water management as civic authorities seek to balance rainfall-dependent reservoir levels with rising demand from a rapidly expanding city. The decision follows a review of the city’s water resources, where officials noted that although the Morbe Dam catchment has received substantial monsoon rainfall, usable reservoir storage remains well below optimal levels. Municipal authorities have therefore instructed developers to discontinue the use of drinking water for construction activities and instead source recycled water supplied through the civic network.
The Treated Water mandate extends beyond the construction sector to include landscaped gardens, sports facilities and educational campuses, sectors that collectively consume significant volumes of non-potable water. Civic departments responsible for engineering, town planning and ward administration have been directed to monitor compliance and ensure that the revised policy is implemented across the city. Urban water specialists describe the initiative as an important step towards strengthening circular water management. Reusing treated wastewater for non-drinking purposes reduces pressure on freshwater resources while improving the efficiency of municipal water systems. While recycled water reduces dependence on drinking supplies for industrial and landscape applications, rainwater harvesting helps replenish groundwater and lowers runoff during heavy rainfall. The municipal administration has also directed greater attention towards public safety during the monsoon by identifying hazardous electrical installations, monitoring flood-prone locations and ensuring that construction materials are properly covered to reduce dust pollution and prevent debris from entering stormwater drains.
