Bengaluru: Motorists on the Mysuru-Bengaluru access-controlled highway are urged to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, as enforcement has intensified. In June alone, police from the districts of Ramanagara and Mandya, along with Mysuru city, issued 1,61,491 fines, amounting to Rs 9 crore.
The violations were primarily detected using advanced surveillance technology, including over 40 automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras installed at 12 strategic locations along the highway. The ANPR system captures violations, which are then relayed to police officers stationed at various points, including exit points and toll plazas. These officers, equipped with tablets, confront violators and collect fines on the spot. So far, this method has resulted in the collection of Rs 48 lakh in fines. However, some motorists opt to pay fines online to avoid immediate penalties. Authorities have announced a stringent follow-up strategy for unpaid fines. Offending vehicle owners who evade immediate payment will face door-to-door enforcement. Regular commuters on this highway will be particularly targeted to ensure compliance. The primary objective, according to a road safety official, is to deter accidents and enhance road safety.
Among the recorded 1.6 lakh violations, the majority, nearly 1.3 lakh, were for not wearing seat belts by drivers or front-seat passengers. Other significant violations included 7,671 cases of overspeeding, 12,609 instances of lane discipline violations, and 1,830 cases of using mobile phones while driving. Despite being prohibited on this access-controlled highway, two-wheelers managed to sneak in through exit points, leading to 9,079 violations for not wearing helmets and 1,082 instances of triple riding. The robust enforcement initiative highlights the authorities’ commitment to road safety on this critical stretch. The use of high-tech surveillance tools and stringent follow-up actions exemplify the proactive measures being taken to reduce traffic violations and associated risks. As the highway continues to be a vital link between Bengaluru and Mysuru, these measures aim to ensure safer and more disciplined driving practices.
