Mumbai’s Metro 3 Barricades Disappearing, Business Optimism Rising

Mumbai’s skyline is undergoing a transformation as the long-standing barricades associated with the Metro 3 project are steadily disappearing. Over the past seven to eight years, these barriers have shaped the city’s landscape, causing disruptions for businesses and commuters alike.

The removal of these barricades marks a significant milestone for Mumbai’s infrastructure, particularly along major routes such as D N Road connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Churchgate railway station. Local businesses, which faced reduced foot traffic and accessibility issues during the barricade period, are now optimistic about a resurgence in customer activity. They report a noticeable decline in revenues and customer visits due to diverted foot traffic, but anticipate a return to normalcy with the barriers coming down.

According to Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), substantial progress has been achieved in restoring normal operations in affected areas. In Package 2 encompassing CSMT, Kalbadevi, Girgaon, and Grant Road, 45% of barricaded roads have been reopened. Similarly, Package 1 covering Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, and Hutatma Chowk has seen 81% restoration. Overall, across all seven packages of the 33.5-km Metro 3 line, 63% of barricaded roads, totaling 18,123 meters out of 28,885 meters, have been cleared. As the focus shifts from barricades to environmental initiatives, MMRCL has initiated tree planting activities above Metro 3 stations. Saplings have already been planted at Churchgate station, with plans to plant 2,600 trees along the entire Metro 3 route, particularly above stations like SEEPZ, Dadar, and CSMT. This ecological endeavour aims to enhance green cover and mitigate environmental impact, underscoring MMRCL’s commitment to sustainable development.

Concurrently, the Metro 3 project is progressing with oscillation trials overseen by the Research, Design, and Standards Organization (RDSO) of Indian Railways, ensuring safety and operational efficiency. Public participation in tree planting activities around stations is encouraged, highlighting the community’s role in fostering green spaces amidst urban development. The phased removal of barricades not only signifies infrastructure enhancement but also symbolizes Mumbai’s evolving landscape towards modernization and environmental stewardship. With ongoing efforts and community involvement, Metro 3 aims to redefine Mumbai’s urban mobility while preserving its natural surroundings.
