Mumbai Western Corridor Project Sees Fresh Cost Increase

Mumbai’s proposed cable-stayed connection between Andheri West and Goregaon West has moved closer to execution with its estimated cost rising to ₹709.16 crore. The increase follows the discovery that a 110-kV transmission corridor conflicts with the planned alignment, requiring specialised relocation work. The revision highlights the cost and coordination challenges involved in building new transport links through Mumbai’s tightly constrained urban and utility corridors. The project will connect the Millat Nagar and Lokhandwala areas with Bhagat Singh Nagar across Goregaon Creek. Its intended role is to create another north-south road connection between Andheri, Oshiwara and Goregaon, reducing dependence on heavily used routes such as S V Road and Link Road.

The additional expenditure is linked primarily to shifting existing electricity infrastructure. The BMC has approved an additional ₹24.58 crore for relocating the transmission line and associated towers, compared with an earlier provision of ₹10 crore. The specialised relocation is expected to be undertaken by the power utility responsible for the infrastructure, subject to the required civic approval process. For Mumbai, the significance of the Andheri Goregaon bridge extends beyond the additional project cost. A new creek crossing could redistribute traffic across the western suburbs and provide an alternative route around congested junctions. A signal-free connection may also shorten travel times for some cross-suburban trips, although its eventual impact will depend on how effectively the surrounding road network absorbs additional traffic. The project has also faced delays arising from land availability in environmentally sensitive areas. The initial contract was awarded in December 2022, but construction could not immediately proceed across all required sections. Surveys, environmental clearances, geotechnical investigations and engineering preparations were undertaken during the intervening period.

Physical work began on the southern side in December 2025 after the necessary land was made available. Current activities include site preparation, alignment marking, piling and construction of temporary access infrastructure. The power-line conflict has added another layer of coordination to an already complex construction environment. The Andheri Goregaon bridge is also planned to connect with the proposed northern continuation of Mumbai’s Coastal Road network. If delivered as planned, that integration could strengthen road connectivity across western Mumbai. However, the wider network effect will depend on junction design, pedestrian access and the management of traffic entering and leaving the new crossing. The project also underlines a broader issue for Mumbai’s infrastructure pipeline: major transport works increasingly share limited space with electricity networks, waterways, mangroves and existing communities. Early utility mapping and integrated planning can help reduce redesigns and unexpected costs.

With the revised expenditure now requiring further approval, attention will shift to whether construction can maintain momentum without additional delays or cost escalation. For residents, the value of the project will ultimately be measured not by the bridge itself, but by whether it delivers safer, more reliable and better-connected movement across the western suburbs.
