Mumbai Weather Alert: IMD Warns of Evening Thunderstorms

The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow nowcast for isolated rain, thunder and lightning in Mumbai, Thane and Kolhapur, with the warning valid for three hours from 5.30 pm on Wednesday. The alert comes as the Mumbai region is expected to see light to moderate rain or thundershowers during the evening and night.

The IMD said light to moderate spells of rain, with the possibility of thunder and lightning, were very likely at isolated places in the three districts. Its local forecast for Mumbai and its suburbs also indicated partly cloudy conditions, with rain or thundershowers possible towards the evening or night.

For Mumbai, the district-wise forecast issued at 11.58 am on Wednesday placed the probability of light to moderate rain or thundershowers in the “very likely” category. The city’s maximum and minimum temperatures were expected to remain around 32 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius respectively on Wednesday.

The forecast indicated that Mumbai and its suburbs could receive one or two spells of light rain over the following 48 hours. Temperatures during this period were expected to remain around 33 degrees Celsius during the day and 26 degrees Celsius at night. For Thursday, October 1, the IMD forecast light rain, with light rain also expected on subsequent days covered by the bulletin.

Thane’s forecast included the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph at isolated places on Wednesday. Light rain or thundershowers were forecast for October 1, followed by light rain on subsequent days.

Kolhapur was also included in the IMD’s 5.30 pm yellow nowcast. The district-wise forecast warned of thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph at isolated places. Light rain was expected to continue over the following days, although the district outlook did not indicate a colour warning from Friday, October 2 onwards.

The alert has direct implications for evening travel and outdoor activity, particularly in areas exposed to lightning, strong gusts or waterlogging. The IMD advised people to avoid open areas during thunderstorms, not stand under tall trees and move indoors if thunderstorm activity develops. It also asked people to stay away from water bodies and objects that conduct electricity.

The IMD’s forecast continues to indicate light rain across Mumbai and neighbouring districts in the near term, while the yellow nowcast remains limited to the specified three-hour period on Wednesday evening.
