Parts of Mumbai will experience a temporary reduction in water supply as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation undertakes planned maintenance at a key pumping facility serving the city’s distribution network. The scheduled work is expected to reduce water availability by around 15 per cent for approximately 20 hours, reflecting the growing need to modernise ageing utility infrastructure while maintaining reliable services for one of the world’s most densely populated urban regions. The civic body has announced that the Mumbai Water Supply Cut will affect sections of the island city as well as parts of the western and eastern suburbs during the maintenance window. The interruption is linked to work at the Panjrapur Mumbai-3A Pumping Station, where water transmission to the Bhandup Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily suspended to facilitate electrical infrastructure upgrades.
According to civic officials, the maintenance programme involves replacing four ageing 6.6-kilovolt high-tension control panels that play a critical role in operating the pumping station. These upgrades form the first phase of a broader modernisation initiative, with the remaining control panels expected to be replaced in subsequent stages. Utility engineers note that replacing electrical control systems improves operational reliability, reduces the likelihood of unexpected equipment failures and strengthens the resilience of essential public infrastructure.
