Mumbai’s water reserves have moved close to full capacity, with the seven reservoirs supplying the city holding 94.69% of their combined useful live storage as of 6am on August 22. The stock stood at 13,70,502 million litres, strengthening the city’s water buffer as the monsoon enters its later phase. The improvement also gives planners greater room to manage supply through the dry months, although high reservoir levels do not eliminate longer-term water-management risks. Several reservoirs are now effectively full. Vihar has reached 100%, while Modak Sagar is at 99.99% and Tansa at 99.02%. Tulsi is at 99.66%. Bhatsa, the largest reservoir in the system by capacity, is at 94.76%, while Middle Vaitarna stands at 94.54%. Upper Vaitarna remains the lowest among the seven at 88.01%, indicating that storage recovery is not uniform across the system. Rainfall across the catchments continues to replenish supplies. In the 24 hours covered by the latest report, Modak Sagar received 28mm, while Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna recorded 24mm each. Tansa received 11mm. Several reservoirs have also been overflowing since July, including Vihar, Tulsi, Tansa and Modak Sagar, reflecting the sustained intensity of the monsoon.
For Mumbai, the significance extends beyond the headline storage figure. Reservoir security reduces immediate pressure on municipal water procurement and distribution planning, while providing a larger operating buffer against a delayed or weaker monsoon in the following season. However, urban planners note that storage alone cannot guarantee resilience. Catchment protection, leakage control, efficient distribution and demand management remain important as the city’s population and water requirements continue to grow. The strong Mumbai water reserves position also offers an opportunity to review how the city manages surplus monsoon inflows. Climate variability can produce increasingly uneven rainfall, making both excess water and prolonged dry spells part of the same infrastructure challenge. Long-term planning therefore needs to connect reservoir management with watershed conservation, flood mitigation and efficient urban water use.
With nearly 95% of useful storage already secured, the immediate concern shifts from scarcity towards responsible management. The next test for Mumbai will be converting this strong monsoon position into reliable, efficient and climate-resilient water security beyond the rainy season.
