Mumbai Water Reserves Near Full Capacity After Rainfall
Mumbai’s drinking-water reserves have moved closer to full capacity after another spell of rain across the reservoir catchments, giving the city a stronger buffer for the remainder of the year. The seven lakes that supply Mumbai were holding 89.49% of their useful live storage by Wednesday morning, with the latest gains highlighting both the importance of a strong monsoon and the need to manage increasingly variable rainfall. The civic water department recorded 12,95,274 million litres (ML) in combined useful storage, against a total live-storage capacity of 14,47,363 ML. The level was 89.05% a day earlier, meaning the reservoirs added about 6,384 ML within 24 hours.
The increase followed 223 mm of combined rainfall across the seven catchments during the reporting period. Vihar received the heaviest spell at 80 mm. Middle Vaitarna recorded 48 mm and Upper Vaitarna 46 mm. Bhatsa received 31 mm, while Tansa, Tulsi and Modak Sagar recorded 8 mm, 6 mm and 4 mm respectively. Several reservoirs are already effectively full. Vihar and Tulsi have reached 100% of their useful storage, while Modak Sagar is also at full useful capacity. Tansa was at 98.77%, and Middle Vaitarna stood at 92.78%. These levels reduce immediate pressure on Mumbai’s water supply system, although reservoir management remains important when intense rainfall produces rapid inflows. Bhatsa remains the largest component of the city’s storage system and is therefore particularly important for long-term water security.
Its useful stock stood at 6,23,819 ML, or 87.30% of capacity. Upper Vaitarna was lower at 81.01%, leaving these reservoirs with greater scope to absorb further monsoon inflows. The distribution of rainfall also underlines why Mumbai’s water security cannot be judged by rainfall in the built-up city alone. Its supply depends on catchments extending well beyond the urban core. Protecting these landscapes from degradation and maintaining healthy drainage systems can help improve the resilience of the wider water network. The latest figures also show how quickly storage can change during an active monsoon. Several lakes began overflowing in July, while releases from Upper Vaitarna were stopped earlier in the season. At Bhandup Complex, cumulative rainfall had reached 2,558 mm.
For households, businesses and public services, the rise in Mumbai water reserves provides greater certainty around supply planning. The longer-term challenge, however, is to convert seasonal abundance into reliable resilience through efficient distribution, demand management, catchment protection and infrastructure capable of handling both extreme rainfall and longer dry periods.
