Another spell of heavy rain has brought Kolkata’s recurring waterlogging problem back into focus, with flooded roads and severe traffic disruption once again exposing the pressure on the city’s drainage and mobility systems. With further rain expected across the region, the immediate concern is not only clearing accumulated water but ensuring that essential travel, commerce and neighbourhood services can continue during increasingly intense monsoon spells.
Recent rainfall has disrupted movement across parts of north and central Kolkata, where waterlogged streets have slowed vehicles and affected public transport. The disruption is particularly significant for a city where road-based commuting supports a large share of daily employment, education, deliveries and informal economic activity. Even short periods of flooding can therefore translate into lost working hours, higher travel costs and reduced access to essential services.The immediate challenge is drainage capacity. Kolkata’s stormwater network has long operated alongside canals, pumping infrastructure and the East Kolkata Wetlands, which together play an important role in moving and retaining excess water. Urban researchers have also identified clogged drainage channels, canal constraints and development pressures around natural water systems as factors that can increase flood vulnerability.That makes Kolkata waterlogging more than a seasonal inconvenience. For lower-income households, street vendors, pedestrians, delivery workers and people dependent on public transport, prolonged flooding can impose a disproportionate burden.
Water-covered roads also increase risks around potholes, open drains and electrical infrastructure, while repeated inundation can accelerate road deterioration and raise maintenance costs.The economic implications extend beyond transport. Businesses lose productive hours when employees cannot reach workplaces, customers avoid affected commercial areas and logistics operators face slower deliveries. For real estate, persistent flooding can also influence where households and businesses are willing to locate, making drainage resilience increasingly relevant to the long-term value and liveability of urban neighbourhoods.Urban planners argue that emergency pumping and drain clearance remain necessary, but cannot substitute for longer-term stormwater planning. Maintaining canals, protecting wetlands and drainage corridors, improving flood monitoring and designing streets to accommodate intense rainfall can reduce pressure on conventional drainage networks.
The next test for Kolkata will be whether preparedness can move beyond responding after streets flood.
