Mumbai’s civic tree authority has approved the removal and transplantation of more than 1,000 trees to facilitate a series of transport and housing projects, bringing renewed focus to the challenge of expanding urban infrastructure while protecting the city’s shrinking green assets. The decision is expected to accelerate key mobility and redevelopment schemes, but it has also intensified debate over ecological safeguards in one of India’s most densely built metropolitan regions. The approved Mumbai Tree Removal proposals cover three major development initiatives, including the elevated corridor connecting Chedda Nagar and Anand Nagar, the large-scale redevelopment of Motilal Nagar in Goregaon, and a redevelopment project in Bandra. Together, these projects are intended to improve transport efficiency, increase housing capacity and support long-term urban renewal across the metropolitan area.
The largest impact will be along the proposed elevated corridor linking Mumbai and Thane, where surveys identified hundreds of trees within the construction alignment. While a significant proportion will be transplanted, several hundred are expected to be permanently removed where engineering constraints make relocation unviable. Officials overseeing the project have maintained that the alignment has been designed to minimise environmental disruption while addressing long-standing traffic congestion along the corridor. At the Motilal Nagar redevelopment site, tree assessments undertaken over multiple inspections identified a substantial urban tree population across the project area. Planning authorities have proposed a combination of transplantation and limited felling, with relocation forming the larger share of the mitigation strategy. The redevelopment is part of wider efforts to modernise ageing housing stock and improve public infrastructure in western Mumbai. Additional approvals have also been granted for redevelopment works in Bandra, where affected trees fall within the footprint of planned construction activities.
Collectively, the Mumbai Tree Removal decisions represent one of the more significant urban tree management exercises undertaken this year. The proposals, however, generated debate during deliberations within the civic authority. Some members questioned whether a greater number of trees could be successfully transplanted instead of being felled permanently and sought greater transparency regarding the handling of timber generated through the works. Environmental planners have consistently argued that mature urban trees provide ecosystem services that extend beyond aesthetics, including lowering surface temperatures, improving air quality, reducing flood risks and storing carbon. Urban development experts note that infrastructure expansion in rapidly growing cities increasingly requires a more integrated approach to ecological planning. While transplantation has become a preferred mitigation measure, its long-term success depends on species selection, relocation techniques, post-transplant maintenance and survival monitoring. Equally important is compensatory plantation that contributes to restoring the city’s overall tree canopy rather than merely meeting statutory requirements.
With approvals now secured, implementing agencies are expected to advance construction activities across the approved projects. The coming phases will be closely watched not only for engineering progress but also for how effectively environmental commitments are delivered. For Mumbai, the outcome will serve as another indicator of whether future urban growth can proceed while preserving the natural infrastructure that strengthens climate resilience and enhances the quality of urban life.
