One of Mumbai’s oldest road crossings is set to enter a new chapter as the replacement of the century-old Tilak Bridge in Dadar moves towards phased commissioning from 2027. The new six-lane cable-stayed structure is expected to significantly improve east-west connectivity across the central suburbs while addressing long-standing concerns over ageing transport infrastructure, traffic congestion and the resilience of one of the city’s busiest mobility corridors. The Mumbai Tilak Bridge project replaces a structure that has served commuters since 1925, linking Dadar East and Dadar West across the suburban railway network. Over decades of increasing vehicle ownership and urban expansion, the existing bridge became a critical bottleneck, carrying traffic volumes far beyond its original design capacity. Engineering assessments undertaken in recent years identified structural deterioration, prompting authorities to pursue a complete replacement rather than undertake repeated repairs.
According to officials overseeing the project, the new bridge will become operational in stages, allowing sections to be opened as construction progresses while minimising disruption to one of Mumbai’s most heavily travelled junctions. The completed bridge will expand road capacity from two lanes to six, creating additional space for smoother traffic movement through a corridor that connects residential neighbourhoods, commercial districts and key railway stations. Beyond increasing capacity, the cable-stayed design reflects a shift towards modern engineering solutions suited to constrained urban environments. By using towers and supporting cables to distribute structural loads, such bridges require fewer supports beneath the deck, making construction more practical over active railway corridors while enhancing long-term durability and maintenance efficiency.
