Mumbai Sees Some Covid Cases in May

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday confirmed that a few cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Mumbai since the beginning of May.

However, the civic body has urged citizens not to panic, stating that the overall number of cases remains low and that it is closely monitoring the situation. According to an official statement issued by the BMC’s Health Department, Covid-19 cases from January to April 2025 were significantly low. The recent detection of a few cases this month has prompted the administration to step up vigilance, although it emphasised that the current trend does not indicate an outbreak. “The Health Department of the BMC is constantly monitoring the spread of Covid-19,” the statement read. “From January 2025 to April 2025, the number of Covid-19 patients has been found to be very low. But since the beginning of May, there have been some cases of Covid-19. However, the BMC administration is appealing to citizens not to panic in this regard.” In the wake of concerns over two recent deaths at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Parel, the BMC clarified that the fatalities were not primarily due to Covid-19. Hospital authorities reported that the two patients—one of them a 14-year-old girl—had severe underlying health conditions.

“The deaths of the woman and the 14-year-old occurred owing to serious diseases such as nephrotic syndrome with hypocalcemic seizures and cancer,” the statement added, stressing that Covid-19 was not the direct cause. The civic body has assured residents that standard monitoring protocols remain in place, and healthcare facilities are prepared to respond should the situation escalate. The BMC also reiterated the importance of maintaining hygiene, following respiratory etiquette, and remaining vigilant, especially for those with existing health issues. While no new guidelines or restrictions have been announced, the city’s health infrastructure is reportedly in a state of readiness. Testing and reporting systems remain operational, and the municipal authority continues to track any rise in cases through ward-level health offices.

The BMC’s message comes amid growing public curiosity and speculation about the possibility of a resurgence of Covid-19. With Mumbai being one of India’s most densely populated urban centres, the civic body’s assurance aims to temper misinformation and unnecessary alarm. As of now, health officials maintain that Mumbai’s Covid-19 situation is under control, and no evidence suggests a wide-scale outbreak.
