Maharashtra is set to re-engineer its tourism landscape with the ambitious revival of seaplane and small aircraft services slated for 2025.
This initiative by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) aims to seamlessly connect major urban centres like Mumbai and Pune with a constellation of picturesque, yet often less accessible, destinations. Locations such as Ganpatipule in Ratnagiri, the Koyna Dam in Satara, the Ujani Dam in Solapur, and Mandwa near Alibaug are earmarked to become easily reachable, promising to slash travel durations and offer an unparalleled aerial perspective of the state’s diverse topography. This venture marks a determined effort to overcome past setbacks. A similar attempt in 2014, linking Mumbai and the Pavana Dam near Lonavala, was prematurely curtailed due to regulatory impediments and complications involving the then-partner. Another proposal to connect Juhu and Girgaum Chowpatty also faltered at the stage of securing essential jetty permissions. Learning from these experiences, MTDC is adopting a more meticulous approach this time around. Strategic emphasis is being placed on identifying locations with pre-existing infrastructure, such as certified waterbodies and operational helipads. Furthermore, a concerted effort is underway to collaborate closely with aviation authorities, aiming to preempt the bureaucratic hurdles that plagued previous attempts.
The blueprint for the 2025 relaunch envisions the deployment of small, agile aircraft capable of accommodating 9 to 19 passengers. These aircraft, with their ability to land on both water and land, offer a significant advantage in accessing a wider array of destinations. MTDC is also actively engaging private aviation firms with proven expertise in seaplane operations, fostering a collaborative environment to ensure service excellence and operational reliability. This synergy between the state tourism body and experienced private players is anticipated to elevate the overall travel experience. Beyond mere transportation, this initiative is conceived as a catalyst for regional economic growth. By enhancing accessibility to various locales, the seaplane services are expected to channel a greater influx of tourists, thereby invigorating local businesses and economies. Moreover, the plan includes the introduction of bespoke aerial tours designed to showcase Maharashtra’s breathtaking natural vistas, significant historical landmarks, and rich cultural heritage from a unique vantage point, promising unforgettable experiences for visitors.
