Mumbai Police are investigating whether a 24-year-old man used artificial intelligence tools to create a forged Prime Minister’s Office identity card in an attempt to enter Jio World Plaza in Bandra-Kurla Complex ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, according to a report by The Times of India.
The man, identified as Rohan Parikh, was arrested along with Dilip Kunde, a former Army serviceman who was accompanying him as a private armed bodyguard. A third person allegedly linked to the case remains on the run, the report said.
The city crime branch is examining Parikh’s claim that he was a scientist carrying out a special assignment for the PMO. Police reportedly checked the identity card with the PMO in New Delhi, which confirmed that it had not issued the document and that the card was fake.
Investigators suspect that the digital identity card displayed by Parikh on his mobile phone was created using AI tools. Police are examining the devices used to produce the card and are also checking whether anyone else helped prepare forged documents connected to the alleged identity.
Teams from the Intelligence Bureau, Research and Analysis Wing and the Anti-Terrorism Squad questioned Parikh and Kunde during the investigation, according to the report. Police are also verifying Parikh’s statements about his alleged official connections and the purpose of his attempt to enter the high-security venue.
The report said Parikh initially told investigators that he had been misled by a fake email sent by a person identified as Jai Shankar. Police later described this account as part of the inquiry into his alleged use of a false identity and assignment. Parikh is also reported to have told investigators that he had lied about his identity and official work to display his supposed connections and gain praise from people around him.
Police are separately examining Parikh’s mental state and the circumstances that may have motivated the alleged attempt. A police source cited in the report said investigators planned to record statements from his parents and conduct a psychological analysis. The source also said the family had described him as normal, while other inquiries had referred to him as someone who could become aggressive and moody.
The case highlights the security checks required at venues hosting visits by senior constitutional and political figures, but the police investigation has not yet established the full purpose of the alleged entry attempt. The authorities are continuing to verify the identity card, the digital devices, the claims about the PMO assignment and the role of the absconding accused.
