Mumbai’s underground Metro Line 3 has transformed cross-city travel by providing a high-capacity rapid transit corridor, but a new assessment suggests that passenger experience continues to be constrained by accessibility shortcomings beyond the trains themselves. The findings indicate that station design, pedestrian movement and weak integration with other transport modes remain key barriers to maximising the benefits of one of India’s most significant urban mobility investments. The study, which evaluated all 27 stations along the 33.5-kilometre corridor, found that although modern facilities such as lifts and escalators are available across the network, commuters frequently encounter lengthy vertical movement between street level and platforms. Long staircases, multiple underground levels and extended walking distances were identified as recurring concerns affecting everyday travel, particularly during peak commuting hours.
Transport planners say these observations reinforce the importance of Metro Accessibility in determining whether public transport systems become widely adopted. While engineering excellence and high-speed operations are critical, passengers often judge a metro network by the total journey experience, including the time and effort required to enter, navigate and exit stations. The assessment also identified wayfinding as an area requiring attention. Inconsistent signage and limited directional guidance can make station navigation difficult for first-time passengers, senior citizens, families with children and people with disabilities. Urban mobility experts note that intuitive station design and clear information systems are increasingly recognised as essential elements of inclusive transport infrastructure, particularly in complex underground networks. Another major issue highlighted is the limited integration between Metro Line 3 and surrounding transport services. Several stations reportedly lack seamless connections with buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws, requiring commuters to walk considerable distances after completing their metro journey. According to urban transport specialists, improving Metro Accessibility through better last-mile connectivity could significantly increase ridership by making public transport a more practical alternative to private vehicles.
Researchers have recommended several operational and infrastructure improvements, including expanding the number of downward escalators, strengthening barrier-free access, improving station signage and enhancing pedestrian facilities outside station entrances. They also advocate closer coordination between metro operators, municipal authorities and transport agencies to create integrated mobility hubs that connect rail services with buses, shared mobility and walking infrastructure. The findings arrive at a time when Mumbai is investing heavily in expanding its metro network to reduce congestion, lower transport emissions and improve regional connectivity. Urban development experts argue that the long-term success of these investments will depend not only on network expansion but also on the quality of passenger experience. Accessibility features that reduce physical effort and simplify navigation can make public transport more inclusive while encouraging greater modal shift from private cars.
