Mumbai’s expanding suburban transit network has taken another step forward with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) initiating the procurement process for the next construction stages of Metro Line 5 Extension, a project expected to strengthen public transport links across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. The latest tender marks the transition from planning to execution for the corridor’s remaining phases, reinforcing efforts to shift commuters towards lower-emission mass transit while supporting the region’s rapidly growing urban population. The authority has invited bids for civil works covering the second and third phases of the corridor after receiving approval to extend the line beyond Kalyan to Ulhasnagar. According to the tender schedule, the successful contractor will be required to complete the assigned works within 48 months, signalling a multi-year construction programme aimed at expanding east-west mobility across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The Metro Line 5 Extension will ultimately create a 34.21-kilometre elevated and underground transit corridor with 19 stations connecting key residential, industrial and commercial centres. Urban mobility specialists note that the corridor is expected to improve access for thousands of daily commuters who currently depend on overcrowded road networks and suburban rail services, while supporting more balanced regional growth beyond Mumbai’s island city. Construction of the first phase between Kapurbawdi in Thane and Dhamankar Naka in Bhiwandi has reached its final stages, laying the groundwork for the remaining sections. The newly tendered Phase II will connect Dhamankar Naka with Durgadi Chowk in Kalyan through two construction packages. These include an elevated viaduct, a nearly three-kilometre underground section, dedicated underground and elevated stations, additional elevated stations, and a creek bridge designed to improve connectivity across challenging terrain.
The final phase will extend the metro from Durgadi Chowk through Kalyan towards Bhoiwada before terminating at Ulhasnagar. Spanning approximately 11.83 kilometres, this section will include four elevated stations and is expected to improve accessibility for densely populated neighbourhoods that have experienced sustained residential and commercial expansion in recent years. Transport planners view the project as an important component of the wider metro network being developed across the metropolitan region. By integrating suburban growth centres with existing and future transit corridors, the Metro Line 5 Extension could reduce dependence on private vehicles, lower congestion on arterial roads and contribute to improved air quality through increased public transport usage.
As construction progresses over the coming years, planners will also face the challenge of minimising disruption during execution while ensuring timely delivery. The corridor’s long-term success will depend not only on engineering completion but also on effective integration with other metro lines, rail services and bus networks, enabling a more connected, resilient and sustainable transport ecosystem for one of India’s fastest-growing urban regions.
