Construction of the Kasheli Metro Depot has crossed the 23 per cent completion mark, marking steady progress on a key operational facility that will support Metro Line 5 connecting Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. While metro corridors often receive greater public attention, transport planners view depot infrastructure as essential for ensuring reliable, safe and efficient operations across expanding urban rail networks. Developed over nearly 27 hectares near the Kasheli Toll Plaza, the depot is being built as the principal operations, maintenance and stabling centre for the approximately 32-kilometre Metro Line 5 corridor. Following environmental approvals received in 2025, construction has accelerated with engineering work progressing across multiple components of the site.
The Kasheli Metro Depot has been designed to accommodate around 30 metro trainsets and will include inspection bays, workshop lines, a dedicated test track, shunting facilities and a central depot control centre. Supporting infrastructure such as administrative buildings, staff accommodation, power supply systems, train washing facilities, sewage treatment, effluent management, rainwater harvesting and firefighting systems are also planned as part of the integrated complex. To enable earlier commissioning of Metro Line 5, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is adopting a phased construction strategy. Temporary operational facilities, including an inspection pit shed, auxiliary power infrastructure, test track and shunting arrangements, are being developed so that train testing, inspections and commissioning activities can begin before the permanent depot is fully completed. One of the project’s major engineering challenges has been the site’s difficult ground conditions. The area is underlain by deep layers of soft marine clay, requiring specialised soil stabilisation before large-scale construction could proceed. Engineers have implemented ground improvement techniques, including Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVDs) and staged surcharge loading, to accelerate soil consolidation and improve the land’s structural capacity for heavy railway infrastructure.
Construction has also advanced on the depot control centre and residential facilities for operational staff. In parallel, major utility relocation works, including the diversion of large-diameter municipal water pipelines, have been completed to facilitate future construction activities without affecting essential urban services. Urban mobility experts note that while depots remain largely invisible to daily commuters, they are among the most critical assets within any metro system. Efficient maintenance facilities directly influence service reliability, fleet availability, operational safety and lifecycle costs. Well-designed depot infrastructure also supports preventive maintenance, helping reduce breakdowns and improve passenger experience over the long term. The Kasheli Metro Depot will ultimately serve one of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s fastest-growing suburban belts, where improved public transport is expected to reduce dependence on private vehicles, ease road congestion and lower transport-related emissions. However, experts emphasise that maximising these benefits will also require seamless integration with buses, suburban rail, pedestrian infrastructure and transit-oriented development around metro stations.
As Metro Line 5 progresses towards completion, the depot’s development represents a foundational investment in sustainable urban mobility. Beyond supporting train operations, it highlights the importance of resilient engineering, efficient asset management and long-term planning in building a public transport network capable of serving the region’s rapidly expanding population.
