The Mumbai Fire Brigade has identified fire safety norm deficiencies in several malls across the city, prompting swift action from the authorities. Out of a total of 68 malls inspected between May 26 and 30, a staggering 17 have been served notices for non-compliance with fire safety regulations.
According to a statement released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the inspections were carried out following directives from BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, particularly in light of a tragic fire incident at the TRP Game Zone in Rajkot, Gujarat, on May 25, which claimed the lives of 28 individuals, including children. Of the 68 malls surveyed, 48 were found to be in adherence to fire safety norms, reflecting a proactive approach towards safety measures. However, the remaining 17 malls were found lacking in crucial safety protocols, necessitating immediate corrective action. Under the provisions of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Protection Measures Act 2006, the identified malls have been issued notices and given a grace period of 30 days to rectify the detected deficiencies. Failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe may result in further legal action against the respective mall managements.
In a separate incident, the Mumbai Fire Brigade has declared the Malad West-based M/s The Mall as unsafe following a fire incident on the premises. The brigade has revoked the earlier notice served to the mall and initiated legal proceedings against its management. As part of the punitive measures, steps have been taken to cut off the mall’s power and water supply, highlighting the seriousness with which safety violations are being addressed. This development underscores the critical importance of adhering to stringent fire safety regulations in public spaces, particularly in high-traffic areas such as malls. The proactive approach taken by the BMC and the Mumbai Fire Brigade in identifying and addressing safety concerns reflects a commitment to safeguarding the lives and well-being of citizens.
