The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Mumbai and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region under an Orange Alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds over the next 48 hours. The forecast has prompted civic agencies to strengthen emergency preparedness as concerns grow over urban flooding, transport disruptions and pressure on critical infrastructure during one of the most active phases of the monsoon. Meteorological forecasts indicate that widespread rainfall, accompanied by wind speeds of up to 60–70 kmph in isolated locations, could affect Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Palghar. The warning comes as an active weather system over the Arabian Sea combines with broader atmospheric conditions across western and northern India, creating favourable conditions for sustained rainfall across Maharashtra.
Weather authorities have also identified Palghar district and Shahapur taluka as areas likely to receive the most intense rainfall during the current weather cycle.
