Maharashtra has approved a ₹45-crore eco-nature project at the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary that will introduce an artificial intelligence-based bird monitoring system, marking a significant step towards integrating digital technology with urban biodiversity conservation. The initiative aims to strengthen ecological research, improve habitat management and promote low-impact nature tourism while safeguarding one of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s most important wetland ecosystems. The project, planned within the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary near Bhandup, combines ecological infrastructure with technology-driven wildlife monitoring rather than conventional tourism-focused development. Officials involved in the initiative said the investment is intended to improve scientific observation of migratory and resident bird populations without increasing pressure on sensitive habitats.
At the centre of the proposal is an AI Bird Sanctuary system capable of identifying bird species automatically, recording movement patterns and generating long-term digital biodiversity databases. The platform is expected to monitor avian activity within a defined radius, enabling conservation teams to assess seasonal migration trends, habitat use and ecological changes with greater accuracy than traditional field surveys alone.
