Mumbai was brought to a standstill on Tuesday evening as heavy rains triggered widespread flooding and severe traffic congestion across the city and its suburbs.
The unexpected downpour, accompanied by thunderstorm activity and lightning, exposed critical challenges in Mumbai’s urban infrastructure, particularly in drainage and traffic management systems.The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued yellow and orange weather alerts for Mumbai and several districts across Maharashtra, forecasting that similar conditions are likely to persist over the next four days. The forecast points to a developing low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea near the Karnataka coast, expected to intensify and move northwards, raising concerns about continued heavy rainfall in the region.
The flooding severely impacted key areas such as Andheri, where the subway was completely submerged, disrupting commuter movement and necessitating an urgent response by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The civic agency deployed drainage pumps to clear waterlogged sections and restore connectivity. Elsewhere, traffic in Powai and other parts of Mumbai came to a near standstill as roads turned waterlogged, intensifying delays and commuter frustration.A tree fell near Jalvayu Complex during the storm, causing temporary blockages and traffic disruption. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the incident underscored the risks posed by heavy rainfall to urban safety and the need for vigilant maintenance of city greenery to prevent such hazards.
In addition to road traffic woes, rail services on the Konkan Railway line suffered disruption when a landslide triggered by the rains deposited large boulders on the tracks between Vervali and Vilavade stations in Ratnagiri district. This interruption underscored the vulnerability of transport infrastructure linking Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka to climatic disturbances and the urgent need for strengthening resilience measures.The ongoing weather situation in Mumbai highlights the urgency for sustainable urban development strategies that prioritise flood mitigation and climate resilience.
