Mumbai Boosts Eco Friendly Idol Preparation

Mumbai is increasing preparations for a lower-impact Ganpati season, with the civic administration distributing 858 tonnes of clay and 25,400 litres of natural colours to idol makers. A further 200 tonnes of clay is expected to take the supply close to 1,000 tonnes. The effort comes as the city prepares for thousands of public celebrations while facing the recurring environmental and logistical pressures created by idol immersion. The clay allocation is intended primarily for artisans producing traditional shadu idols, which use natural clay instead of plaster of Paris. The expected volume is broadly in line with last year, suggesting that the availability of alternative materials has not yet translated into a major shift in the composition of idols being made across the city.

The scale of the festival makes that transition significant. There are currently 1,136 locations within Mumbai’s municipal limits where artisans are preparing idols. Greater use of clay-based materials can reduce the persistence of non-biodegradable material after immersion, but urban sustainability experts say material choice is only one part of the equation. Collection, transport, immersion capacity and post-immersion handling also determine the environmental outcome. Mumbai is therefore preparing additional artificial immersion ponds. Last year, facilities were available at 298 locations. Rather than substantially expanding the number of locations, the civic administration plans to increase pond capacity at individual sites, with some locations expected to receive multiple ponds. The aim is to make immersion quicker while providing more accessible alternatives for smaller idols.

This infrastructure will also create another waste-management requirement. Idol remains collected from artificial ponds are expected to be transported to designated processing or storage locations, including the former dumping-ground site at Mulund. The accumulated material has previously remained in storage while the civic administration worked towards a longer-term scientific disposal and recycling mechanism. That gap is important because an environmentally preferable immersion method still produces a substantial material stream. A sustainable festival system therefore needs a clear chain from clay distribution and idol production to immersion, collection, processing and final reuse or disposal. Without the final stages, environmental gains made earlier in the process can be weakened.

Meanwhile, public participation is already substantial. The civic body has received 1,885 applications from public Ganesh mandals, with 1,835 permissions issued after scrutiny involving municipal and police authorities. For Mumbai, the immediate priority is to manage festival demand without shifting environmental costs elsewhere in the city. More clay, additional immersion capacity and better handling of idol remains can reduce pressure on natural water bodies, but the longer-term measure of progress will be whether these systems become routine, scalable and financially viable for artisans and communities alike.
