Maharashtra has accelerated plans to develop the Bhandup Bird Park within the ecologically significant Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, committing ₹45 crore to create a nature-based destination that combines biodiversity conservation, environmental education and low-impact tourism. The project signals a shift towards integrating ecological assets into Mumbai’s urban development strategy while limiting intervention in environmentally sensitive landscapes. The funding, approved through the District Planning Committee, is expected to fast-track implementation of the Bhandup Bird Park, which will be located inside the Ramsar-recognised Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. Spread across nearly 20.09 hectares, the sanctuary supports one of the region’s richest ecosystems, hosting around 250 species of resident and migratory birds. Authorities have indicated that only about 0.35 hectares will be used for visitor infrastructure, reflecting an effort to minimise ecological disturbance while improving public access to nature.
Urban planners increasingly view such projects as essential green infrastructure rather than recreational amenities alone. As Mumbai continues to expand, protected wetlands and mangrove ecosystems are becoming critical for climate resilience, flood mitigation and biodiversity preservation. Carefully managed eco-tourism can also strengthen public awareness of fragile ecosystems while generating economic opportunities linked to conservation. The proposed Bhandup Bird Park will include a 2.16-kilometre mangrove nature trail, bird observation points, elevated viewing decks, watch towers, a butterfly garden, a jetty and a Nature Interpretation Centre equipped with educational facilities. Supporting infrastructure such as parking and visitor services has been designed to improve accessibility without significantly altering the sanctuary’s natural character. One of the project’s distinguishing features is the planned deployment of an artificial intelligence-enabled bird monitoring system, expected to be the first of its kind at an Indian eco-tourism destination.
The technology will assist in automated species identification, real-time monitoring, biodiversity documentation and long-term ecological data collection. Environmental researchers believe such digital tools can improve scientific understanding of migratory bird populations while enhancing visitor engagement through interactive learning experiences. Officials involved with the project noted that multiple statutory approvals have already been secured, including environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone clearances, allowing implementation to move into the execution stage. The initiative has also received backing from state tourism and eco-tourism authorities alongside regional planning agencies, indicating coordinated institutional support. The project reflects a broader evolution in urban planning where ecological conservation is increasingly recognised as a component of resilient city infrastructure. However, environmental experts emphasise that long-term success will depend on maintaining strict ecological safeguards, limiting visitor pressure and ensuring continuous scientific monitoring after the park becomes operational.
If implemented with these safeguards, the Bhandup Bird Park could become a model for balancing conservation priorities with public access, demonstrating how rapidly growing metropolitan regions can invest in biodiversity while expanding sustainable tourism and environmental education.
