Mumbai Air Pollution Drive Removes 47 Tonnes of Dust and C&D Waste

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has launched a 10-day road-cleaning and dust-control campaign across Mumbai to tackle air pollution linked to roadside dust and construction and demolition waste ahead of the festival season. The campaign will run from October 28 to November 6, according to an official statement cited by Mid-Day.

The drive is being conducted by the BMC’s Solid Waste Management Department across major arterial roads and identified dust-prone stretches. Planned measures include intensive road cleaning, mechanised sweeping, removal of accumulated dust and silt, and water sprinkling to control airborne particles.

The civic body has allocated Rs 15 lakh to each ward for a special pre-Diwali cleanliness drive. The funding is intended to support road cleaning and dust-control measures as the city moves into the winter period, when the BMC said it is seeking to maintain Mumbai’s Air Quality Index.

A special cleaning operation was carried out on Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road in Parel on October 31. The operation focused on accumulated roadside dust and pollution associated with construction and demolition activities. The BMC has instructed officials to ensure prompt collection and safe disposal of the waste removed during the drive.

The civic body also reported that the entire 11-kilometre stretch of the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road was cleaned on Saturday. The operation resulted in the collection of eight tonnes of dust and 39.5 tonnes of construction and demolition waste.

The JVLR operation involved 95 personnel and 11 pieces of equipment. The machinery deployed included two JCB machines, two dumpers, one mechanical power sweeper, two NCAP mechanical power sweepers, three walk-behind e-sweepers and one divider-cleaning unit.

The BMC said the campaign is intended to reduce road dust and pollution from construction debris while supporting the maintenance of Mumbai’s air quality during the winter season. All wards have been directed to undertake the drive until November 6, with the campaign focused on road cleaning and dust-control measures across the city.
